Day 9- UK Cruise- Glasgow, Scotland

Updated: Feb 26, 2024

You know it was going to be a great day when you step off the cruise ship and you were greeted by bagpipes!

We arrived in Greenock and it took 41 minutes by train to get to Glasgow.

Glasgow is the most populous city in Scotland and it is situated on the River Clyde in the country's West Central Lowlands.

I was excited to go to Glasgow, as "Outlander" is filmed nearby. The first thing we went to see was the Glasgow Cathedral. The building of Glasgow Cathedral began in 1136 and took about 350 years to finish. In Outlander, Glasgow Cathedral’s crypt was used in season 2 as the inside of the L’Hopital des Anges. and where Claire volunteered in Paris to work at the hospital run by Mother Hildegarde and the nuns of the Couvent des Anges.

The Cathedral was beautiful and while we were there we ran into my mom and three aunts who was on a shore excursion. Right next to the Cathedral was the Glasgow Necropolis and a museum.

Glasgow is known for its resplendent street art scene with some of the best, most attractive and appealing visuals for you to be in awe of as you walk the streets of this beautiful city. Here are some of the scenes we saw walking to lunch.

On the way to lunch we walked through George Square and Argyll Arcade. The Argyll Arcade is one of Europe’s oldest covered shopping arcades and Scotland’s first ever indoor shopping mall and it is where we saw some expensive jewelry.

For lunch we ate at Sloans which was established in 1797. Jeremy and I shared the SLOANS SHARER, which had Mini Mac, Southern Fried Chicken Strips, Garlic Bread, Sweet Potato Pakora, Haggis Pakora, Pakora Sauce, and Peppercorn Sauce. We choose this to share as it had Haggis on it, and we wanted to try while we were in Scotland and Haggis is banned in the USA. Haggis is a savoury pudding containing sheep's pluck (heart, liver, and lungs), minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, and cooked while traditionally encased in the animal's stomach, though now an artificial casing is often used instead. I was able to get one bite down, but I did not like it and I am never going to eat this again!

We then took the subway to the University of Glasgow. The University of Glasgow is a public research university in Glasgow, Scotland. Founded by papal bull in 1451 it is the fourth-oldest university in the English-speaking world and one of Scotland's four ancient universities.

As you guess, I wanted to go there because the main building appears (as Harvard University) in Outlander season 3.

We then took the train back to Greenock and walked back to the ship.
