Day 8- UK Cruise- Belfast, Northern Ireland

Updated: Feb 26, 2024

Belfast is the capital and largest city of Northern Ireland, standing on the banks of the River Lagan on the east coast.

We took a taxi from the cruise port to Titanic Belfast. Located beside the Titanic Slipways, the Harland & Wolff Drawing Offices and Hamilton Graving Dock – the very place where Titanic was designed, built and launched, Titanic Belfast tells the story of Titanic from her conception, through her construction and launch, to her maiden voyage and subsequent place in history.

Jeremy and I did The Titanic Experience. Per the website "In the self-guided Titanic Experience you will uncover the sights, sounds, smells and stories of the ship, as well as the people and city that made her. Follow our themed one-way route as you journey through boomtown Belfast and the shipyard where the liners were built, to the launch, fit out and maiden voyage, before discovering more about the sinking, aftermath, the quest to find Titanic and her final resting place. All whilst exploring the hopes and dreams of those whose lives were impacted by the great ship and wondering at our collection of unique Titanic artefacts."

Some of my favorite exhibits of Titanic Belfast was seeing the different statements of the three classes and the items they recovered from the wreckage.

Jeremy and then walked on the Maritime Mile from Titanic Belfast to the City Centre. We saw the following

  • SS Nomadic- the world’s last remaining White Star vessel and RMS Titanic’s original tender ship, now restored to her original glory and back home in Belfast’s historic Hamilton Dock.

  • SoundYard - a playful art installation inspired by the sounds of Belfast’s shipyards. It is located on Queen’s Quay close to the Odyssey and Abercorn Marina.

  • Glass of Thrones Window Art (Games of Thrones was filmed near Belfast)

The rest of the day we explored Belfast. We ate at The Morning Star, did some shopping, and saw Belfast City Hall, Victoria Square, Albert Clock Tower, the Beacon of Hope, the Big Fish, and churches.
