Day 6- UK Cruise- Inverness, Scotland

Updated: Feb 26, 2024

As there was no trains from Invergordan Port to Inverness, we purchased a shore excursion from the cruise line. Our excursion was "Inverness on Your Own" The description of this excursion was "Inverness, the Capital of the Highlands, nestles in a ring of mountains round the mouth of the fast-flowing River Ness as it flows into the Inverness Firth. A transfer journey of 45 minutes traveling alongside the Cromarty Firth waterway and then over the hills will bring you to the bustling town of Inverness. You are then free for approximately 4 1/2 hours to explore this highland town at your leisure."

On the way to Inverness, we saw the countryside and we got to see a Scottish Highland Cow! Once we got to the Inverness, we took a taxi to Culloden Moor Battlefield. On 16 April 1746, the final Jacobite Rising came to a brutal head in one of the most harrowing battles in British history. Jacobite supporters, seeking to restore the Stuart monarchy to the British thrones, gathered to fight the Duke of Cumberland’s government troops. It was the last pitched battle on British soil and, in less than an hour, around 1,600 men were slain – 1,500 of them Jacobites.

Once again, as I am a huge "Outlander" fan, I wanted to see the battlefield as this battle was in season two. We saw the museum, battlefield, Leanach Cottage, and the memorial. The battle was the end of an era for for the Scottish Clans system and each clan that fought at Culloden Moor had a memorial.

When we got back to Inverness, we went to the Victorian Market for lunch and souvenirs.

At the market, we heard a local musician sing Cadie's favorite song.

We then headed back to our bus to go back to Ivergordan.
